Painted furniture and mirrors

I had this little black chest sitting in my little white kitchen since the day we moved. I wasn't too crazy about it, nor liked how it looked there. Too dark, too ‘serious” looking?

So I painted it, applied clear wax, and now I'm loving it! Oh yes I’m into painting furniture these days. I am! I’ve been wanting to try the Annie Sloan chalk paints for the longest time, but cannot decide if I should pay that much for paint. I’m I too frugal? I want to try making my own chalk paint some day. The Internet is overflowing with great videos and posts on how to make your own chalk paint. I find this a little messy thought, plus I’m not too sure about the “mix-this-measure-that” part. Even when cooking I seldom follow directions... I just don't like the ‘measuring’ part… unless it is something new I’m trying I just add the amount of ingredients I think I should, and that’s it. But don’t follow my advice, OK? ;) My daughter can never understand how I can add salt to my food just by guessing the right amount ;)

Anyway, the other day at Home Depot I found out that they carry chalk paint… yes, did you know that? Their line is called the Americana Décor Chalky Finish paints. And it is my absolute new favorite paint on the planet. Cheap. Fast. No need for priming. And beautiful colors.

Now, is this what they call the “heavily distressed look”, or is it more like a bad painting job? Hehe!

Truth be told, heavily distressed furniture gives me the impression of furniture that has been rescued from a dump… no offence intended. When you think about it, isn’t it a little odd that we purposely age our furniture now? Growing up in an underprivileged family and remembering most of our furniture looking just like this one on this photographs below (and this was not OK back then, believe me) I don’t think I’d ever want  to have pieces of furniture like this on purpose.

Do you like the Shabby distressed look?

So I went for a second coat of paint on my little black dresser...

and this is what it looks now...

By the way, I love these silk roses.  The ones with the tarnished tips were originally all white… I dipped them in coffee to make them look old.  Pretty~

Then I added some pretty knobs to it… crystal sea foam green knobs I bought at Hobby Lobby long long time ago and hadn’t decided where to use them… until now.  In our previous homes I had used these knobs as decorations… they’re so pretty!

The color I chose for this little chest is called "Primitive".

Beautiful.  Fast.  Immediate satisfaction.

I love mirrors in the kitchen... and everywhere as a matter of fact

Mirrors bring light and beauty into any room…

They’re like windows to me that you can move around and place as you like…

So I tried one or two mirrors before deciding on these small ornate ones…

A rectangle and oval mirrors for added contrast.

and an added French flair to the kitchen

Love it!

Home Depot carries only certain colors of the chalk paint at the store, but you can order whatever color you want online. Check COLORS here.

By the way, in case you’d want to know, the color I chose for my dinning room table on my previous post, it is “Vintage”, also from Deco-Art-Ameriocana.

Happy Monday
and
Happy painting!

  1. Good Morning ...Wanted to see what new thing you are showing us today before I get ready for work. I have to say I was a bit worried about the chest in the early picture, distressed is not one of my favorite looks. I should have known better, you have such good taste and then I scrolled down. What a difference, it looks so much nicer painted and the glass knobs added just the right touch. Isn't it funny how you buy something and don't always have an intended use for it, you just like it. Then suddenly you know just the perfect place. I love mirrors too, I have them in every room of my house..especially when you walk by and the tree or sky outside is reflected, bringing the outside in.
    Enjoy your week..

    1. I can picture it in my mind... the trees, the sky, the outside reflected inside through the magic of mirrors... I so love them! Hope you had a nice day in Muggle world today ;)

  2. I love our transformation! The green knobs are perfect and the mirrors are enchanting! I was just reading a comment by someone who moved from Nebraska to Georgia - as it turns out, she may be living very, very near to me. Reading my blog, my sharing our little town, encouraged her - she said she was hoping to meet me one day and was excited! I thought how we touch lives - how blessed we are to blog and to share our hearts - inspire and encourage! I hope you're finding Kindred Spirits where you live! So wish you were nearby too! I understand how moving such a long distance and to a place where you don't know anyone can be...nesting in our homes is a way of comforting ourselves - to make our corner of the world ours - you're doing a beautiful job! Whether you're down the road - a couple hours away...it doesn't matter - through sharing in blogging we're just as close as this post and this comment - I hope you have a very happy, blessed - blissful week,
    Hugs,
    Kathy

  4. Wow, that's quite a change Cielo, I love how the chest looks now. I have to confess that I too dislike (really dislike) distressed furniture for some of the same reasons you do. I'm relieved to know I'm in good company, I was beggining to feel like an oddball for not liking it. Those coffee tinted roses are just lovely. What a great idea.

    1. You're not an oddball... and if you are, then many of us are too ;) I think people like us, who understand what poverty is up to some extend dislike this style naturally… is it in us.

  5. Absolutely love the idea of mirrors being "moveable windows" - gorgeous thought!

    1. And they are... they're windows. I love to look in a mirror and imagine that there's no wall behind them, just another dimension through which you can step into... and fly away ;)

  6. What a beautiful transformation - and I love the mirrors you added above it! Your 'untamed' garden (past posts) is beautiful as well. Wishing you much happiness in your little white cottage in the woods!

  7. Love your decorating style and your blog. I totally agree with you about distressed furniture. My daughter loves it and encourages me to paint and distress some furniture that I have had for many years. I told her that I grew up living with old worn out stuff and now that I can afford better things, no way do I want to relive the olden days. I think distressed furniture is a fad that will go by the wayside when the big bloggers get tired of it and move on to something else. I wonder how they will remove all that chalk paint when the styles revert to beautiful wood finishes again. Your mirrors look lovely displayed as you have them. I look forward to learning more about your little cottage in the woods.

  8. That looks fantastic. I really like the touches of blue and the mirrors over the furniture.

  9. I found you again! I'm SO glad! Love your new home and I can't wait to see more. Thank you for sharing about the Americana Paints. I feel the way you do about spending too much money on chalk paints - and I also agree with you about the distressed look. I LOVE what you did with your little cabinet in the kitchen. I can't wait to head for Home Depot to get some of that paint and start a couple of long-planned projects. I'll be back to see more.

  10. Cielo you must try homemade chalk paint!!! You'll save soo much $$ and you're not limited on colors, you can turn any latex paint into chalk paint. Home depot sells the little tester jars of Behr & Glidden $3, get it tinted any color you like, mix in the ingredients and you can paint two small pieces the size of the one in your pic! I too hate measuring and I no longer measure. I've tried all the homemade recipes of chalk paint on the internet and my fave is Plaster of Paris. I simply mix the plaster of paris with water until I get the consistency of a thick gravy, then add the mixture to my paint. Roughly 1/2 cup to 1 1/2 cups of paint. But again, I don't measure here either. I've played around with it enough to just kinda know the consistency I like, you'll get the feel for it in a few tries. If you add too much Plaster mixture you'll know bc your paint will be too thick. If that happens just add a little water to the paint. I've always read that you must use Flat paint (not eggshell, satin, etc) but I've used all finishes and honestly it doesn't make a difference IMO. I always check the "oops" paint at HD too, score a gallon for 9 bucks, mix up some chalk paint and you can paint furniture all year! Lol. You really should give it a try! :) but this post is from 2014 so maybe you have by now :) happy painting!
