Around the wild garden...

Because we don’t have an in-ground sprinkler system here, like we used to back at the house in the roses, watering is a labor of true love… I mean, real love. You have to unroll the thousand meters hose and roll it back every time everyday, backtrack to straighten the kinks out every time everyday, because every time you straighten one kink out another one immediately takes its place, and you sweat rivers no matter if it is as early as eight in the morning, and while you pound and pound the earth removing its bones so that you can be able to plant anything, you get bit, scratched, sunburned and smashed by all sorts of inconveniences in nature. Have you ever heard me complain about gardening or nature this bad before? ;)  I so love it… I truly do love it all.

And all the while you are doing all that hard work, swirling round and round in your brain is God’s words to Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis… “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread”… of course, in my brain is more like “by the sweat of your whole body you shall see your flowers”… but you keep on going because you are a foreseer of the future by nature… it is in you. You are a believer of everything that’s good, and fair and lovely and because although there’s nothing yet to be seen of beauty around here at the moment, you know… oh you know what is to come… so you keep trying and trying like some of the creatures in the wild garden do...

Until one day their dreams come true...

Oh yes, dreams always come true, you just have to believe it!

I watered and fed every flower in every flower pot and flower beds this morning.  The hanging pots of ferns on the front porch are super hard to water because I cannot take them down.  So I get soaked from head to toe every time I water them.  I fed the hydrangeas with hydrangea’s food and the rest of the flowers, including the roses, with some vitamins for super blooms.   They are all doing splendid.  I cannot be any happier.

In the back, where the woods are thick and dark and mysterious, I spread thousands of itty bitty tiny wildflowers seeds, along with several hostas by the bank of the little creek… then I cleaned another flowerbed by the pond and planted there two more Shasta Daisies… I want a road of tall white flowers for sunny breezes to play with there, between the pond and the outside dinning room where the patio table and chairs are.

I need a patio umbrella too, but I gave away by mistake the center piece of the table where the umbrella goes, and have to figure out now what can we do. We can get those big umbrellas that go outside the table and you can move it around wherever you want, but they are kind of expendy and on this kind of weather things outside don’t last long.

Wouldn’t be nice if this scraggy tree here could grow wide and expand its limbs into green lush arms of a wonderful natural umbrella? I’m hoping that it would some day…

I have hundreds of stories to share… I have seen and heard and felt so many strange and wonderful things around here, you would not believe it… this is an enchanted place indeed, and the privets are home to fairies and wood’s imp and I have a rabbit friend who comes to visit all the way from Wonderland from time to time. I have birds a dozen, squires, and there are turtles… yes, my dear, I have a ‘snapping’ turtle friend named Luigj, who lives in the little creek which separates the garden from the woods… and kitties, oh kitties of every color come by too. They have discovered my garden… or discovered me, you figure! ;)

The thing is I think I have the power to attract cats… yes sir I do. They always seem to find me.  I got to play with two adorable twin kitty brothers that came by to say hi the other day… but I’m sure that the big black cat I seen strolling around in the early evenings must be a magical cat. I saw him disappeared in front of my very eyes the other evening. I went outside as soon as I could, but he was nowhere to be seen. I wait for him every evening, by the window facing the mysterious woods.

More stories to come! ;)

  1. I know what you are going through - my front has sprinklers and half of the back yard does to. So that means that I have to water half the back yard everyday and yes the darn hose kinks up all the time. one day I am going to take a hatchet and cut it to pieces, because when I purchased it - No Kinking LOL that was a big lie. But I won't because I don't want to purchase another one. I have found that with all of the hoses I have purchased NONE of them do not kink. Doesn't matter if they are cheap or expensive they all kink up. The more expensive ones are so HEAVY to pull around so I buy the Walmart Specials. In some areas I have put soakers and just attach the hose and let that do watering. That's the price we pay for beautiful gardens.
I just love the kitties - they are so cute.
Enjoy your lovely garden and I can hardly wait till you have everything the way you want it, but that is a never ending for me, because I am always changing everything around.
You say it is so hot in the morning - what state did you move to. I live in Southern California - Fullerton and it can get hot, but we don't get the humidity that the south gets, thank goodness.
Well my dear I have so enjoyed reading about your new journey and the post to come.
    Have a wonderful Memorial Day.

    1. Mary… oh dear, you cracked me up! I can picture you clearly in my mind, hatchet in hand cutting your serpent-like hose to pieces while it fights you back and twist and turns and and.... oh my goodness you made me laugh... Thank YOU.

I have to say I am easy to laugh. I laugh at practically everything; at every joke my husband and kids say or try on me just to see me laughing at whatever things it occur to them… they don’t understand though that the funniest part is not actually what they say as much as what I see…. It is a gift, really. Thank you for making me laugh. Keep up your sense of humor. I totally love it.

  3. Cielo,
your cottage is shaping up so nicely! I'm so glad all of your wild life friends have found you in your new home. I live in Florida where the heat and humidity can take your breath away some times, so I know what you mean about sweating rivers when your outside but eventually your plants will begin to flourish and it will have been worth it!! I don't know how far south you are, but here in Florida you learn to go out really early before the sun is to high or very late evening, However evenings can be a problem because of mosquitos. I know with your passion for gardening you will figure out what works :) Have you thought about trying one of those pocket hose? Its made out of some kind of special material that expands when you turn on the water and then automatically shrinks back to a very small size when you turn it off,
so you don't have to fight with it so and its non kinking, it looks like it would be such a time saver and convenient too. They have them in places like Wal Mart. Maybe I should mention this to Mary also since I follow her blog as well before she gets that axe out? Ha Ha Blessings to you and yours
    Teresa,

  4. Maybe you could suspend your ferns on a chain with an S hook to bring it down more to your level. I enjoy your blog and followed you also at the House in the Roses. It looks like you are settling in just fine. I hope the hydrangeas do well for you. Those are my favorites. I wish you well.

  5. Ah The lament of the garden hose, a song sung by every gardener. I'm sure all of us feel like Mary at one time or another...Your garden is showing all your hard work, it's going to be beautiful with flowers everywhere. I have to say, my favorite part of you garden is the woods, with all the secrets and wildness, It's like a whole other realm and what you can't see makes it more enchanting than what you can see. I think the birds, squirrels and kitties are just the welcome party sent to meet the new neighbor and will go back to tell others, "She's one of us, don't be afraid."
The kitties are drawn to you because they feel your gentleness. Cats are like women, they hold so many secrets in their hearts and their eyes.
Your little white cottage is wonderful, and if you look at the first pictures from before you moved in and the ones you have shared recently, you can see a difference. Aside from the planting and décor changes, there is warmth about it now that wasn't there before. Your heart is in the house now and the change is like glow of a candle on a dark night.
Can't wait for the stories to come.

    1. Sherry... your words are like flowers on an barren field to me... I love how you describe the change you see, not in the physical realm, but in the intangible… oh, I believe if we maintain beauty and love in our hearts and believe in the power of joy and human warmth, this can not only transform us, but also transform the way we look at the world and the way others look at us too… you’re a special soul… you know that?

      Love

  6. I had hanging ferns like yours at one time, and I bought a long hose wand that attached to the end of the hose and it works great for the hanging plants or the low ones also. I bought it at home depot or lowes and it was about $12. It is 2-3 feet long pole with a sprilkle attachment at the end. PS...I love how happy you are playing in your new enchanted garden!
