How to Celebrate Christmas on a Budget

When the month of December came rolling down the hill outside our little white cottage this year it took me by surprise… where has the year gone?    Where did the time go? It’s almost hard to believe that this is going to be our second Christmas in the South.  Our first one in our little white cottage!  I’m excited.  Days are not long enough for me to savor them all; savoir all its moments, its blue skies and sunny days.  I drink all my days with an enormous thirst; always wanting to stretch them; stretch each hour and make them eternal if only I could.

This year I wanted a new all clear lights Christmas tree.  A less dark green Christmas tree if you know what I mean.  I’d never really liked our pre-lit multi light Christmas tree, but it was a gift from my hubby several years ago and I couldn’t do much about it.  I was planning on giving it away this year though, because I knew I didn’t want it in our little white cottage; which calls for a more romantic, hazy and serene look.

I didn’t want to buy a new Christmas tree either as I’m learning to keep my life affordable, and we don’t have the extra space for a much larger tree anyway.  So this year I was planning on a ‘no Christmas tree’ Christmas.   Until I thought about some possibilities…

Oh yes… I could paint my old Christmas tree! ;)

I was going to get rid of it anyways, so I didn't mind if it didn't turn right.

I spray painted my tree in white… lights and all.  I didn’t want to use the colored lights anyway so that really helped.  I can’t imagine spending hours covering each light with masking tape or removing them.  I wouldn’t have painted the tree if that was the case.

Since I wasn’t going to use the cable that came with the tree, I cut it and throw it away.

I didn’t want to paint my tree super white in case it turned out too fake.  So I just toned it down with one can of paint and left some green in it to just give it the feel of a light snow on branches.  If you want to change the color of your tree entirely you will need a larger amount of spray paint to cover it.

After the paint dried up I took the tree inside and adorned it with all clear lights.  I never thought I could do something like painting a Christmas tree and still come up with a product that I would love displaying in my home ;)

No more colored lights...

Love how the white paint toned down the dark green

Love the amount of ruffles on the pink Christmas tree skirt!
Can I share a secret?  Yes, it’s an old window curtain!

I like simple Christmas trees and try to avoid cluttering things with excessive accents.  I prefer lights to ornaments.  So I didn’t use any Christmas ornaments... only a few lace trims for garlands and some snowflakes spray painted in pink.

Frugal yet creative

Every day that passes I’m more and more in love with our little white cottage… it is a humble home indeed, with a humble kitchen that doesn’t even have a garbage disposal or a pantry… yet, I’d never felt more in love with any of our homes than with this one. I can honestly look back and realize that everything happened for a reason. Everything that fell apart has fallen back into place beautifully and magically.

Thank you for being here my friend!

Feeling the Christmas magic...

"It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas; soon the bells will start, and the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you sing right within your heart.”

I have been feeling happy, silly, feeling the joyfulness of the season stirring up in my soul; already wrapping up the gifts of time and love within my heart in preparation for the days ahead, and I've been enjoying decorating our little white cottage for the holidays, and now it looks like a house of lights; a big Christmas tree of sorts where each room and furniture is a Christmas ornament and bauble.

Outside birds are everywhere, and more active than usual with all their comings and goings in wings of reds.  There were so many cardinals reunited in one same tree this morning, that they resembled Christmas ornaments on naked tree branches against the muted colors of the wintry landscape.

Then this afternoon swirls of leaves everywhere... strong winds passing through our neighborhood whipped up a little hurricane of cinnamon and pumpkin-colored leaves... leaves dancing everywhere, heaps of leaves being lifted from the floors and blowing down from trees, instilling in me the desire to be part of this fanfare in which Nature entertain itself.

The Fisherman surely knows how to make me happy and the other day surprised me with the entire universe in red and green.  Of course, that's how I see it, but it really is just a star night laser drawing millions of tiny stars all over our little white cottage's exteriors... on trees, bushes, and furniture... even our living room and part of the kitchen gets inundated with the little red and green stars coming in straight from the large windows....

I'm elated, as you can imagine and cannot stop going outside in the purest and most creepy of darkness to just see how enchanting our little white cottage looks outside... out of a fairytale book! Everywhere I look, and all I see, is simply pleasing to my senses...

“Christmas now surrounds us, happiness is everywhere.
Our hands are busy with many tasks as carols fill the air.”

Have you started decorating your home for the holidays yet? In our living room I still have that same old Christmas tree I spray-painted a few years ago; still looking good and still the only one I can fit in there.  This year, I wanted something really simple, something maybe unique, but always pretty. So I just wrapped some burlap ribbons around the branches, added lots of pinecorns from our woods to give it that organic look and feel I love, and top it all with strings of starry glove Christmas lights.  I love it so much!  A smaller tree sits in my tiny kitchen and another one outside.  I'll be showing you more pictures soon!

Hope you're having a wonderful week.  Hugs to all!

The Christmas trees

The larger Christmas tree I had in our living room last year will have to remain in its box, as we don't have a space for it this year.  This is what it looked like last year...

Not too big of a tree either...

but definitely a much larger one than what I have this year,
as you can see here.

This big chair here was sitting in our bedroom originally, but this summer I moved it to our living room to make space in our bedroom for my mirror gallery wall and a new side table that's sitting there now...

Thus, that robed the only space available for the larger Christmas tree.  That's why this little one here is now the king of the jungle this year.  It sits on top of the table by the window where it doesn't take a lot of space.

Adorned with new and bigger frosted lights.
I love these lights.  They look like winter moon orbs.

I set a wooden dish filled with Christmas ornaments and twinkling lights by it...
It looks so pretty all lighten up in the evening.

Then yesterday I found this cutie at a thrift store and brought him home....
A fairy-elf with wings in the form of a holly leaf on his back
and the cutest little cardinal in his hands!

I find him just adorable...

All lighted up again with the fairy lights I so love
May have to keep them up for a while after Christmas...
'cause I like them so much! ;)

Outside our front porch sits the other smaller tree
I thought I was just buying one tree, but instead found two of them
when I opened the box last year.

Outside looking in...

I made this Christmas wreath for the door.... in red, black and white to match with colors of my front porch.

And here is me taking pictures outside in my socks and new PJs...
so cozy!
And a little cuckoo in the head....

Burrrrrr.... oh baby it's cold outside!

Is it cold where you are?  I miss the snow, but I rather see it in photographs... ;)
