ORC: The Urban Outfitter look under a budget

The One Room Challenge reveal day, an event hosted by Linda from Calling it home, is finally here!  Just a few week ago it seems, I was showing you the room I wanted to transformed for this event... You can read more about it HERE, and HERE, and HERE, and even HERE.

I loved that room, but my individual styles in interior decorating are always growing and evolving.  Plus, one of my favorite ways to change things up a little in my life is to switch out some of my home decor.  I adore the eclectic, vintage-inspired look of the Urban Outfitters apartment section.  The kilim rugs and pillows, tribal patterns, deep, rich neutral colors and textures and large leafy plants, and I wanted to create a space that simulated all that muted-color goodness, under a budget.

First off, I want to say that I am not an interior designer; nor have I the fortune either to have the option of including gorgeous products from awesome sponsors in my tiny cottage, but I believe that everyone under the sun can and should have a beautiful home.  There’s plenty you can do to create a stylish and inviting home, even if you're pinching pennies.  Believe me, making your house beautiful on the cheap is possible.  With that said... let's see what I did!

This is what my room looked like before....

To now this...

What I did:

All the plants I already had.  Just had to bring them in...

Toning down the colors in my decor introduced that certain softness and balance I was looking for...

Before, this room was a loud combination of eclectic, over-colorful bohemian.  I wanted to try elements and shades that evoke the essence of the aesthetic, and what a change that alone made!

For the bed, I wanted a neutral medallion comforter like the ones I'd seen from Urban Outfitters, but I wasn't so keen on the store's steep prices.  I couldn't find anything I like that fitted with my budget anywhere else either.  So what I did?  I opted for this chic 'shower curtain' from Target!

Now who could have said that a shower curtain wasn't meant for a bed! It has the perfect colors and design I was looking after, and I cannot be any more happy with it!  Perfectly UO Bohemian to me if you ask me!

The addition of soft textiles, like this super soft grey throw, a couple of contrasting patterned pillows, and a dark faux fur pillow finished off the look.

The woven basket and area rug have the same indie, rustic feel of UO I was after, but without leaving a hole in our pockets.

I was thinking of covering the white walls above the bed with a medallion tapestry, or a hippie tapestry Mandela, but decided to keep things simple instead and avoid visible clutter.  I still wanted to hung something in that big, emptied wall though, so I wrapped some string lights I already had around an old grapevine wreath I already had, and made my very own Urban Outfitter style wreath for free...

Easy, free and super cool!  I keep it on all day, and only turn it off before going to bed at night. Sweet!

This eclectic little corner here has a number of beautiful touches, filled with unique geometric shapes and forms, which are then softened by the neutral color scheme and some fresh green plants. The textures and mood board on the back add some spice!

For my mood board I incorporated all sorts of things I love; elements that fit into my idea of eclectic bohemian, such as old photographs, dried roses, antique paper, and a couple of the Frida Kahlo's little canvas I made awhile back.  You can read how I made them here.

I'm so happy with how it turned out... I love to stand in front of it and just look at all the pretty things I see there.  My mood board does not only makes me happy, it also adds such a bohemian feel to the room.

This next photograph here was my inspiration for the window... taken from the Urban Outfitters site.

And this is what I came up with for a lot less... I already had the extra long Ikea, Lill panels (they come in packs of 2 for $5), and I was so lucky to have found these lovely gray lace panels for only $9.99 a panel at the Christmas Tree Shops... almost identical to the lacy curtain made exclusively for UO by Plum & Bow, but for a whole lot less.

They instantly added a unique touch to the space! Simple and sophisticated. I added some twinkling lights around the top for an extra bohemian feel...

My wall art:  Pages from a calendar secured to the wall with push pins and framed with frog tape.  I was lucky to have found this beautiful quote calendar at Big Lot a few months ago.  I knew I was going to use it for something else other than a calendar.  I love the muted colors and the kind of hippy vibe to it.  Beautiful and made for an easy wall art solution.

My old guitar and embroidered shawl make for a cool, indie vibe.

A few books stacked on the floor, red faux flowers for a pop of color and some Moroccan lanterns finish off the look.

A smaller area rug over a larger one adds contrast and pizzazz...

This wall here is not finished yet, as I'm still adding a few more hats to my humble collection, but for now it looks pretty cool to me!

Another element I incorporated later in the room is this little stool here, which for the longest time remained painted in Shabby Chic pink in one of the rooms in our little cottage, now a modern plant stand.

By sprucing it up with some gold spray paint and a white-black piece of fabric stapled on the top, I transformed it into a UO bohemian piece.

And last, but not least, I confectioned this trendy Christmas tree to add to the organic look, which I may have to leave up all year because I like it so much!!

A perfectly twisted pinecone branch found in the woods with plenty of tendrils and pinecones included!  A little nature to my decor that also adds a festive touch to the approaching season...

To add extra organic flair to my tree I decorated it with the cutest burlap Christmas ornaments you could ever find... all under a budget.  From Big Lots all of places!  Love them so much!

So there you have it.
I'm so happy at how everything turn out.
And all done mainly with things I already had on hand!

    1. Hi Betty... I usually use LED light strings. Battery operated lights are a hustle, because I like to leave the on all day, so I seldom use them.

  11. This is a gorgeous transformation! I think it elevates the look and is a little more mature (nothing wrong with the "before" but I really love the "after"!) I also love that your mood board still incorporates quite a bit of color in an otherwise mostly-neutral room. It adds a lot of interest. Fantastic ORC makeover!
